The Museu do Ipiranga is the headquarters of the Museu Paulista, which is a museum specialized in material history and culture and is part of the University of São Paulo. The building in which the exhibitions and spaces for educational and cultural activities are installed today was designed to be a monument in commemoration of the Proclamation of Independence, which occurred in 1822. The building was built between 1885 and 1890. In 1894, it was re-created as a Museum do Estado (Museu Paulista) was transferred to the monument. It was thus that the histories of the oldest public museum of São Paulo and the Monument to Independence were mixed and, from then on, it became known as the Museu do Ipiranga.
